Access to water and sanitation services: Regulators and suppliers meet in Bujumbura
On 23 and 24 July 2024, Burundi will host the first meeting of the ‘Water and Sanitation Regulator-Provider Platform’, organised by ESAWAS (Eastern and Southern African Water and Sanitation Regulators Association), AAEA (African Water and Sanitation Association) and APAA (Association Panafricaine des Acteurs de l'Assainissement). The two-day event in Bujumbura, Burundi, will bring together around fifty participants from various water and sanitation companies, regulatory bodies, NGOs and waste collectors from twenty African countries.
The theme of the workshop is ‘Factors for sustainably improving performance in terms of access and quality of services’, and it aims to promote effective and efficient provision of water and sanitation services. The aim is to encourage dialogue and the sharing of experiences between regulators and regulated entities, in order to meet the current and future challenges facing the sector.
The workshop programme includes plenary sessions, interactive discussions and presentations by experts in the field. Discussions will focus on policies, the search for funding, and data collection and management.
The Executive Director of the AAEA will speak on ‘The state of water and sanitation service provision in Africa’, a presentation that is eagerly awaited in view of the considerable challenges facing the water and sanitation sector, such as unequal access to services, dilapidated infrastructure and lack of adequate funding.
