The AfriCap Programme (Capacity Building Programme for the African Water and Sanitation Association), funded by USAID. It supports the institutional strengthening of the AAEA and develops three (03) key themes.

BACKGROUND

Although the final millennium development goals (MDG) evaluation report has globally shown progress in drinking water access, there remain challenges in achieving sanitation goals. The UN millennium water group however pointed out that the current pace of progress is still too slow to reach the goals in Africa, where only very few countries had met the targets. However, the long-term sustainability of the current achievements is not guaranteed

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The African Water and Sanitation Association (AfWASA) is a continental knowledge management platform of the water and sanitation sector that  brings together utilities of drinking water production and distribution, utilities managing  sanitation  services, as well as the regulators  of water and sanitation sectorial policies in African countries  in view of sharing  knowledge  and  best practices. Though AfriCap program  the following component are conducted:

1)  Disseminate knowledge products and best practices consistent with the demands of AfWASA members;

2) Develop partnerships and mentoring relationships between AfWASA members;

3) Improve AfWASA institutional capacity.

IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY

The overall strategy  will comprise  three  (03) levels of operations: (i) Overall coordination  at AfWASA headquarters in Abidjan, (ii) Classroom trainings through the AWASA structure  and (iii) Peer-to-peer  learning  activities facilitated by Regional Imple- menting Partners.

GOAL

The Project is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). It aims at supporting AfWASA to achieve its broad mandate in capacity building  of African WASH stakeholders through (i) dissemination of knowledge (ii) Peer-to-peer  learning partnership and (iii)AfWA institutional capacity development.
