The African Water and Sanitation Association (AfWASA) is registered in Côte d'Ivoire as an international non-profit NGO under the number Arrëté N° 751 and recognised by NGOsource as a charitable organisation eligible for international funding. The AfWASA is governed by a strong and inclusive governance structure, aimed at promoting transparency, accountability and efficiency in its operations. The governance bodies of the AfWASA are as follows:
The General Meeting is the supreme body of the Association. It brings together all Active Members, Affiliated Members, Individual Members and Honorary Members. It meets in ordinary session once a year, or in extraordinary session when circumstances so require. The Ordinary General Meeting deliberates on all matters relating to the organisation and operation of the Association, and also issues recommendations to States concerning national and international policies on drinking water, sanitation and sustainable development.
The Executive Committee is the Association's executive body. It is made up of 18 members, distributed as follows:
In general, the Executive Committee has the broadest powers to act on behalf of the Association, defending its interests both as plaintiff and defendant. The members of the Executive Committee are all Managing Directors, with the exception of the Chairman of the Strategic and Technological Advisory Board. They elect their Chairman from among their number, who thus becomes the Chairman of the Association.
The Strategic and Technological Council forms the core of the Association. It is made up of 25 members selected from the different categories of members (active members, affiliate members and individual members) and represents the five regions of Africa, taking care to ensure balanced gender representation. The Strategic Council is chaired by a President and its term of office is two years, renewable once.
The Executive Board is the Association's permanent executive body. It is headed by an Executive Director, appointed by the Management Committee after a call for candidates, for a three-year term of office, renewable once only for an equivalent period.
The main mission assigned to the Executive Management is to ensure the operational management of the Association in administrative, legal, accounting and financial terms, as well as in terms of the implementation of programmes/projects related to the water and sanitation sector in order to satisfy its members and guarantee its growth and sustainability.
The Executive Director is supported in his tasks by three (3) departments
